Tragic Loss of Young Student Nurse During Volunteer Trip in Ghana

A 19-year-old student nurse, Millie Ann Gentry, tragically lost her life in an accident during a midnight swim with friends while on a volunteering trip in Ghana, by “Yahoo“.

Daily Mail” reported that Gentry, who was two weeks into her month-long stint, ventured out for a swim in the sea after spending time at a pool bar with friends Erin Byrnes and Lewis Mallinson, breaking the 10pm curfew. The group was unexpectedly pulled further out by a wave, leading to a struggle in the water.

Mallinson recounted the harrowing moment when he realized they were in trouble and sought help, while Byrnes attempted to keep Gentry afloat. Despite their efforts, Gentry drowned, and a local search ensued for her body.

An inquest revealed that Gentry had suffered a head injury in the water, contributing to her drowning. Her mother, Tracy, in a heartfelt statement, remembered her daughter as a kind-hearted individual passionate about pursuing a career in children’s nursing.

The trip, organized by The Mighty Roar, included safety advisories against swimming at night. Senior coroner Martin Fleming ruled the death as misadventure, noting that the friends were overwhelmed by the sea after consuming a minimal amount of alcohol.

Gentry’s passing is a profound loss, highlighting the unforeseen dangers that can occur even during the most well-intentioned adventures.
