AA Data Dispels Concerns Over EV Performance in UK’s Cold Weather

Despite fears fueled by incidents in Chicago, where EV batteries were reported to deplete quickly in extreme cold, the AA’s statistics show a different story in the UK.

In January, only 2.3% of EV-related callouts were due to batteries running out of power, marking the lowest rate since September 2023. This suggests that EVs are more resilient to cold weather conditions than previously thought.

AA president Edmund King, who will participate in an online event on Wednesday run by electric motoring support provider EV Cafe, said: “There were lots of horror stories in January, originating in the USA, that EVs don’t work in the cold.

He highlighted strategies employed by EV drivers, like pre-heating cars and using heated seats to conserve battery life, as effective adaptations to colder climates.

The AA attributes the decreasing trend in EV callouts to an expanding public charging network, improved vehicle ranges, and better driver education.

Despite a recent drop in new electric car sales, the AA remains optimistic about the future of electric motoring in the UK, stressing the importance of incentives, reliable infrastructure, and clear government policies to support the transition.
