Jon Stewart mocks Trump’s shifting explanations about Iran war

Comedian and host Jon Stewart took aim at Donald Trump’s conflicting statements about the administration’s military conflict during a recent episode of The Daily Show.

During his monologue, Stewart used a satirical approach to highlight what he described as confusing and contradictory messaging from the president about the war. To illustrate his point, he introduced a fake “expert panel” composed entirely of Trump himself, using clips from various interviews and public appearances.

“To clear up all the confusion about this war, I’ve assembled an expert panel to help explain what the war is actually about in a lucid and clear-cut way,” Jon Stewart said. “So please welcome to the program, President Donald Trump, Donald J. Trump, D.J.T., and John Barron.”

The segment showed four clips of Trump responding to the same question: whether the United States is actually at war. “There’s been some confusion over whether or not we’re even at war,” Stewart said. “Can you clarify for us if America is at war?”

The video responses appeared to contradict each other. One clip described the conflict as “just an excursion into something that had to be done,” while another called it “a little excursion, and I think it’s only that.” A third clip framed the situation very differently, saying “we’re winning the war by a lot.”

A fourth clip attempted to combine those views. “It’s both—it’s an excursion that will keep us out of a war.” Stewart then turned to the question of timing and progress in the conflict. In one clip, Trump said: “Combat operations continue at this time in full force and they will continue until all of our objectives are achieved.”

Another clip contradicted that claim entirely. “We won. We won. In the first hour, it was over.” “That was two weeks ago!” Stewart replied. “So the objectives—if we won, and our objectives are met, and that was two weeks ago, why are we still at war?”

A third Trump clip offered what Stewart jokingly called a solution to the contradiction. “We already won in many ways, but we haven’t won enough.” “Motherf—er!” Stewart reacted.

Stewart then introduced yet another Trump clip, jokingly referring to it as “Don from Palm Beach,” and asked when Americans would know the conflict had truly been won. The answer was blunt: “When I feel it. When I feel it in my bones.”

Stewart responded with another jab. “All due respect to your bones,” he said, “but should we really be giving them more responsibilities? Seems like they’ve got enough on their plate with the getting you up and down the stairs thing.”

The segment aired as the administration continues to offer varying explanations of the conflict and its goals. During a recent interview on Fox News, Trump also addressed economic concerns tied to the conflict, including rising oil prices after disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to The New York Times, the ongoing Iran War began on February 28. Since then, Iran has attacked several ships passing the waterway, affecting 70% of the world’s oil supply.

“This will bounce right back when it’s over, and I don’t think it’s going to be long when it’s over,” Trump said.
