Actor Kiefer Sutherland arrested after allegedly assaulting a ride-share driver

Kiefer Sutherland was arrested in Los Angeles this week following an alleged confrontation with a rideshare driver, according to police and court records. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed on Tuesday that officers responded to a call early Monday morning about an alleged assault near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood. Investigators later identified the suspect as the Emmy-winning actor.

In a statement, LAPD alleged that Sutherland “entered a rideshare vehicle, physically assaulted the driver (the victim), and made criminal threats toward the victim.” Based on that report, officers arrested the actor on suspicion of criminal threats. Police added that the alleged victim did not suffer any injuries requiring medical treatment at the scene.

Documents show that the “24” star was arrested and booked on Monday, with bail set at $50,000. He was released later that evening at 11:30 PM local time. Sutherland is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 2.

The incident adds to a complicated legal history for the actor. In 2007, Sutherland was charged with drunk driving in Los Angeles after failing a field sobriety test. He was released on $25,000 bail and later pleaded no contest to the DUI charge, ultimately serving 48 days in jail.

Two years later, Sutherland faced assault allegations after reportedly head-butting fashion designer Jack McCollough during a dispute in New York following a Metropolitan Museum of Art fundraiser. The situation was later resolved when both men released a joint statement, and charges were dropped.

“I am sorry about what happened that night and sincerely regret that Mr. McCollough was injured,” Sutherland said at the time. McCollough responded, “I appreciate Mr. Sutherland’s statement and wish him well.”

Beyond legal troubles, the past few years have also been personally difficult for the actor. His father, legendary actor Donald Sutherland, died in 2024 at the age of 88. Kiefer honored him publicly, calling him “one of the most important actors in the history of film.”

More recently, Sutherland appeared in the TV special “CBS News: Rob Reiner — Scenes from a Life,” where he shared memories of director Rob Reiner following his death. He recounted a moment on the set of “A Few Good Men,” recalling Jack Nicholson filming the famous courtroom scene.

“No one said a word, and Rob went up to Jack Nicholson and whispered in his ear, ‘Do you want to do another one?’ And Jack Nicholson said, ‘Well, we’re here,’” Sutherland said. “So they did another one, and it was just as extraordinary.” He added that Reiner then halted production for the day, recalling the director saying, “I couldn’t ask for anything more, so you guys all have the rest of the day off.”
