New information about Val Kilmer’s passing has come to light, and it’s even more heartbreaking than fans expected. The Hollywood legend, best known for his roles in Top Gun and Batman Forever, died on April 1 at the age of 65 — and now his death certificate has revealed the true extent of what he endured.
According to TMZ, Kilmer died from pneumonia, but that wasn’t the whole story. The document also listed multiple serious underlying conditions, including acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, and squamous cell carcinoma at the base of the tongue — a form of throat cancer.
This type of cancer affects the lining of the throat, including the larynx and pharynx. Kilmer had publicly battled it for more than a decade, undergoing tracheotomies that left him unable to speak. Despite losing his natural voice, he returned to the screen in Top Gun: Maverick, where his voice was digitally recreated — a moment that brought many fans to tears.
In his Amazon Prime documentary, Val Kilmer opened up about life with a voice box and the struggles he faced daily. His son narrated most of the film, giving a raw, emotional glimpse into the actor’s reality. Kilmer himself said: “I am sounding much worse than I feel. I can’t speak without plugging this hole [in his throat]. You have to choose to breathe or to eat. It’s an obstacle that is very present with whoever sees me.”
Though in 2020, he proudly announced he’d been cancer-free for four years, the recent certificate suggests the illness made a comeback before his death. It also listed signs of malnutrition and a medical condition known as a tracheocutaneous fistula — a complication where an opening remains in the throat after a tracheostomy tube is removed.
His children, Mercedes and Jack, paid tribute to their father in a touching statement to People magazine, saying: “We are so proud of him and honored to see his legacy celebrated. At this time, we would like to grieve privately.”
Kilmer has now been cremated, and tributes have poured in from around the world. Friends, fans, and fellow actors have taken to social media to express their love and heartbreak, remembering him not just as a star but as a fighter who faced every challenge with bravery.
His death may have come quietly, but his impact continues to roar through generations of cinema lovers.
