Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid didn’t hold back as she put Keir Starmer on the spot during her appearance on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. When asked about Starmer’s push to involve the military in securing peace between Russia and Ukraine, Susanna delivered a blunt reality check.
“There is no doubt that he has developed a reputation as somebody who can operate very effectively on the international stage,” she acknowledged. But then she cut straight to the issue at home, questioning whether the British public would really support his foreign policy if it came at their own expense, reported the Express.
“But the thing is, if you ask people on their doorsteps, of course, they want to back Ukraine—but at what price?” she asked. “And I think if the things he is flexing his muscles over at home, be it benefits or personal independence payments for people if it looks like he is using welfare and cuts to welfare to pay forthe war, I’m not sure that is going to be popular at all.”
Her comments hit a nerve, tapping into the growing concern that Starmer’s international ambitions could come with a domestic cost. With the government already under fire over potential cuts to benefits, the suggestion that struggling households might foot the bill for foreign policy decisions could be a hard sell to voters.
Starmer’s stance on Ukraine has largely been praised, with many seeing him as a competent leader on the world stage. However, Reid’s pointed remark highlights a major political risk—if people feel they’re personally paying the price for his global reputation, public support could quickly turn.
As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, the balance between international commitments and domestic welfare is becoming increasingly scrutinized. With Reid bringing this issue into the spotlight, Starmer could find himself facing tough questions from the public in the weeks to come.
