Starmer’s Urgent Warning to Europe—‘Step Up Now or Risk Disaster

Sir Keir Starmer has unveiled a major new deal allowing Ukraine to tap into £1.6 billion of UK export finance to buy more than 5,000 air defence missiles. Speaking at a press conference after a high-profile security summit in London, the Prime Minister stressed that the weapons—set to be produced in Belfast—will not only support Ukraine but also create jobs in the UK’s defence industry.

“This will be vital for protecting critical infrastructure,” he said. “Now, and strengthen Ukraine in securing the peace when it comes.”

The announcement comes hot on the heels of a blunt message Starmer delivered to European allies at Lancaster House, warning them that they must act. Addressing leaders from across the continent, he declared: “We gather here today because this is a once-in-a-generation moment for the security of Europe and we all need to step up.”

Among the 19 global leaders present for the talks was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky—though notably absent were the Americans. With former US President Donald Trump’s increasingly isolationist stance, Washington’s commitment to European security has been thrown into question, adding a layer of uncertainty to the crisis talks.

It’s a stark contrast to just days ago when Zelensky found himself on the receiving end of a frosty reception in Washington. In a tense Oval Office meeting, Trump and his running mate JD Vance berated the Ukrainian leader, with Trump branding him “disrespectful” and warning he was “gambling with World War III.”

Against this backdrop, Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine during a more amicable meeting with Zelensky over the weekend. However, with the US playing a pivotal role in global security, the Prime Minister is also walking a diplomatic tightrope—hoping to keep Trump onside to prevent further aggression from Putin.
