Shopkeeper Takes Drastic Measures in ‘War Against Shoplifters’: Baby Milk and Detergent Hidden Behind Counter

In a bid to combat persistent shoplifting, Steve Green, owner of the One Stop shop in Barlaston, known locally as Leese’s, has resorted to concealing baby milk, washing tablets, and liquid detergent behind the store counter. This move marks the first time in the shop’s 39-year history under the Green family’s ownership that such drastic measures have been taken.

Shoplifting incidents have reportedly escalated at the branch, with Steve Green citing increased thefts just before the onset of the coronavirus lockdowns. Notices posted throughout the store explain the decision to relocate certain products, stating, “Due to a spate of shoplifting, we have taken the decision to relocate the washing detergent. We have placed them behind the counter.”

The shop’s staff is now urging regular shoppers to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspected criminal activities. According to Steve Green, shoplifters have been targeting the store for the past three to four years, taking various items, including chocolate, baby milk, washing detergent, and other high-value goods that can be quickly sold elsewhere.

Despite the ongoing efforts, shoplifters have adapted, resorting to stealing alternative items like meat, coffee, and chocolate. Steve Green emphasizes that these incidents have a direct impact on the store, affecting its profitability and requiring significant time and resources for CCTV checks, police paperwork, and constant stocktaking.

As the shop is a franchise rather than company-owned, losses from theft directly affect the local business. The challenges posed by these ongoing thefts divert attention from essential tasks, hindering the shop’s ability to focus on other critical aspects of operation. The shopkeeper remains hopeful that increased awareness and police intervention will help mitigate the impact of shoplifting on their business.
