TV presenter Ruth Langsford has bravely shared her struggles with health fears, particularly concerning Alzheimer’s disease, in an intimate interview for the March issue of Woman and Home. The 63-year-old discussed a range of topics, including her separation from former husband Eamonn Holmes, cosmetic procedures, and her approach to aging, but it was her candid reflection on her family’s experience with Alzheimer’s that stood out.
Ruth, who witnessed the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s on both of her parents, expressed her deep-seated fears of the disease. “I’m a bit ‘head in the sand’ about Alzheimer’s,” she admitted. “Both my parents have had it, I know what it entails and it horrifies me. There’s a test you can do to see if you’re more likely to get it, but, because there’s no medication to treat it, I’d rather not know. When I have senior moments, as people call them, I panic. Then I let it go, because I can’t bear to think about that”, OK! magazine.

Ruth’s father, Dennis, passed away in 2012 after battling dementia, and she now cares for her 93-year-old mother, Joan, who is also living with the condition. A close friend revealed that since Ruth’s split from Eamonn last year, her anxieties about her health have only grown. “Ruth looks after her mum, so she’s very aware of Alzheimer’s, but it is scary for her,” the source said. “She knows it runs in families and doesn’t want it to happen to her. It is at the back of her mind. She has been fearing more for her health, in that sense, since the split.”
The emotional conversation also touched on Ruth’s separation from Eamonn, whom she had been married to for 14 years. The couple, who share a 22-year-old son named Jack, announced their divorce last May. In a joint statement, they confirmed, “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.” While the exact reasons for their breakup remain private, Eamonn quickly moved on, beginning a relationship with Katie Alexander. Despite the “very painful” and “very difficult” divorce, Ruth remains hopeful about love, stating that she is “okay being solo for now but not forever.”

Throughout these challenges, Ruth has found strength in her bond with her mother, Joan, who has been her rock. Ruth often shares heartfelt moments with her mother on social media and has been open about the emotional toll of Alzheimer’s. “You’re grieving for them while they’re still alive. They are physically there but their spirit appears not to be. It’s like you’ve lost them… but there they are,” Ruth explained.
Ruth has also embraced her role as an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society, sharing her personal experience with the disease and the grief it causes. “With my father’s Alzheimer’s, I was grieving and losing my dad, but you have to remember my mum was losing the love of her life,” she said.
In addition to her emotional journey, Ruth has made notable changes to her lifestyle. Since the split, she has focused on fitness and wellness, shedding some pounds and prioritizing her physical health. “I want to eat as well as I can, but I don’t want to be a bore,” she remarked. Sources close to Ruth confirm that these changes have had a positive impact. “She’s lost weight. There has been divorce stress, but she’s also been watching what she’s eating and taking her dog Maggie for lots of walks,” they shared. “She’s really taking care of herself and it shows – inside and out.”
