Paramedic Worker who lied about sister being hospitalized and was later caught drink driving is fired for ‘Sustained Dishonesty’

A London paramedic has been struck off the medical register after a tribunal found she repeatedly lied to her employer, including falsely claiming her sister was in intensive care to get out of work.

Natalie Twomey first sent an email in November 2022 telling bosses at the London Ambulance Service she was heading to Norfolk because her sister’s condition had “deteriorated.” In her message, she wrote, “I’ve had to phone in sick as my sister has deteriorated again and had to drive back to Norfolk to be with her.”

But investigators discovered that her sister was actually home decorating for Christmas—and posting about it on Facebook. Twomey had even shared her own post reminiscing about a beach vacation, saying, “8 days till this paradise again.”

When questioned months later in April 2023, Twomey insisted her sister had indeed been in ICU, but the story fell apart. She also blamed a brother-in-law for the social media post, but a tribunal concluded she knew her sister wasn’t ill at the time.

Ms Twomey emailed her bosses at the London Ambulance Service claiming her sister who she had previously said was in intensive care had deteriorated and she needed to be with her.

Twomey’s troubles didn’t stop there. At a later point, she showed up to work smelling of alcohol and was pulled from frontline duty. She failed to disclose this restriction to the Health & Care Professional Tribunal Service (HCPTS) when renewing her license, claiming instead that an injury kept her from doing patient-facing work.

She was officially dismissed in November 2023, but later interviews revealed she had claimed to have resigned and denied ever facing a disciplinary hearing.

In April 2024, Twomey was arrested for drink-driving and banned from driving.

The HCPTS tribunal said her “deliberate dishonesty” seriously damaged public trust. The final report noted her behavior was “sustained over a period of time between 28 November 2022 and 20 March 2024” and involved “ten individual findings of dishonesty.” The panel added that her attitude appeared “long-standing and deep-seated,” concluding that striking her off the register was the only fitting response.
