Mum-of-Three’s Chilling Final Words Caught on Safety Watch After Husband’s Axe Attack

Nelomie Perera had endured more than most in her 20-year marriage — a volatile husband, emotional abuse, and even signs of violence — but when she finally found the strength to walk away, the consequences were unthinkable. Originally from Sri Lanka, Nelomie moved to Australia at 10 and went on to build a life in Melbourne with her husband, Dinush Kurera.
The pair had three children together, and while she tried to maintain a stable home for them, behind closed doors, she lived in fear. Despite the strain of Kurera’s temper and suspicions of abuse, she stayed — until she found out he was cheating on her while abroad in Sri Lanka, reported the Mirror.
That was the breaking point. With her husband away on one of his frequent “business trips,” Nelomie made her move. She filed for divorce, got a court order banning him from the family home, packed up his things, and told him in a message, “I want a divorce. I am not going to live my life afraid of you anymore.”
Kurera denied everything, claiming the affair was “in her head.” But Nelomie, terrified of what he might do, had police help her change the locks and was issued a safety watch for protection.
When he returned to Australia on 1 December 2022, he was served with the court order at the airport. Furious, he accessed his belongings in storage — then went to a hardware store and bought a crowbar, axe, and petrol.
On 3 December, dressed in black, he broke into the back of Nelomie’s house and waited, armed. At 11pm, as she stepped out for a cigarette, he ambushed her. Her screams brought her teenage daughter rushing in, only to see her mother bleeding on the kitchen floor and her father looming with an axe.
The daughter pleaded with him to stop. Instead, he grabbed a kitchen knife and attacked Nelomie with both weapons. Her 17-year-old son stepped in, only to be chased and struck with the axe.
The children begged him to stop, threatening to call for help. He told them he’d burn the house down if they did. For 14 horrifying minutes, he continued the attack while Nelomie’s safety watch silently recorded it all — including her last words to her daughter: “I’m dead.”
The children escaped and ran to neighbours. CCTV captured the daughter screaming, “Dad’s killing Mum… I’m pretty sure she’s dead.” Kurera later told police he acted in self-defence — but he had no injuries, and chilling audio captured him bragging in jail, “She deserved this. Look what she made me do.”
In court, his now-adult children bravely testified. His daughter said, “What happened will forever haunt me.” His son admitted, “He is not my dad anymore. He’s just another person.”
The jury took just three hours to convict Kurera of murder. He was sentenced to 37 years in prison — with parole only possible after 30. The judge made it clear: “No one but you is to blame for her death.”
