Mum of Baby Murdered by His Dad Fights Vigorously to Keep Him Locked Up for Good

Sheree Black, the mother of 14-week-old Cameron, is campaigning to ensure her son’s killer, Ryan Leslie, remains in prison for life. Leslie, who was convicted in 2011 for inflicting fatal injuries on Cameron, is eligible for parole in two years after serving the minimum 17 years of his life sentence.

Leslie’s crimes, which included 14 rib fractures, severe bruising, and a fatal blow to Cameron’s head, were described as brutal and unremorseful. Sheree is now writing a victim impact statement to be read by the parole board and Leslie himself, as part of the pre-tariff review process that assesses his suitability for release.

Sheree, 35, told Metro: “He could have tried to help his son; instead, he made him suffer even more. Somebody like that shouldn’t receive parole. He hasn’t shown any remorse or admitted what he did. Life should mean life.”

The thought of Leslie reading her statement is daunting, but Sheree is determined to convey the severity of his crimes. “You’re trying to get your point across without coming across as vulnerable or weak to the man who destroyed my life,” she said.

In addition to her statement, Sheree has launched a petition, which has garnered widespread support after her emotional TikTok plea was viewed nearly half a million times. She urged the parole board to “honor Cameron’s memory by ensuring that his killer remains in prison.”

Leslie’s trial in 2011 revealed his significant risk of reoffending. Sheree warned that releasing him would “undermine the justice system” and endanger others. “People who commit minor offenses don’t belong in the same category as someone who killed a baby. This is a completely different level,” she said.

Writing the impact statement has been an emotional but cathartic process for Sheree. “I’ve hidden away for a long time,” she admitted. “Speaking out has brought immense support and a sense of relief. It’s part of the healing journey I didn’t realize I needed.”

The Northern Ireland Prison Service stated that victim impact statements play a crucial role in parole considerations, ensuring victims’ voices are heard. Leslie’s case is currently under pre-tariff review, a step that evaluates his rehabilitation and behavior in custody. Sheree remains steadfast in her fight, determined to ensure that her son’s memory is honored and that justice prevails. “He robbed my son and me of his life,” she said. “Life should mean life.”
