Moment masked mob steals £1.2 million worth of jewellery in just 70 seconds

A group of masked thieves carried out a rapid and highly organized robbery at a jewellery store in Fremont, California, stealing more than £1 million worth of valuables in just over a minute.

The dramatic raid targeted Kumar Jewelers and involved nearly two dozen suspects who arrived in several vehicles before storming the store in what investigators described as a “mob-style takeover.” Surveillance footage later released by the U.S. Department of Justice shows the group quickly overwhelming the store and smashing display cases while grabbing jewellery.

Authorities say the robbery began when a stolen Honda vehicle was driven directly into the front of the shop, crashing through the door and allowing the group to rush inside. Once inside, the thieves used pickaxes and hammers to shatter glass display cases before filling bags and backpacks with jewellery.

Within roughly 70 seconds, the suspects managed to steal more than three-quarters of the store’s inventory, including gold and diamond items. Officials estimate the value of the stolen jewellery at around £1.28 million.

During the raid, two armed suspects reportedly held a security guard hostage to prevent interference while the rest of the group carried out the theft. After collecting the jewellery, the suspects quickly fled the scene in multiple vehicles, which sped away in different directions.

The strategy made it difficult for police to immediately pursue all of the suspects. Officers arriving at the scene were forced to choose a single vehicle to follow while the rest escaped.

According to court filings reported by the East Bay Times, prosecutors described the chase that followed. “Forced to decide which car to pursue, officers continued after a black Acura, which led them on a pursuit through several residential areas in Fremont.

“During the pursuit, the black Acura passed other vehicles on the wrong side of the road, ran stop signs at multiple intersections and reached speeds of approximately 80 miles per hour while veering across lanes.”

The chase ended when the Acura crashed. Several suspects fled the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, but were eventually caught by officers.

Four men were arrested following the pursuit: Afatupetaiki Faasisila, 20, of San Bruno; Jose Herrada-Aragon, 20, of Concord; Andres Palestino, 19, of Concord; and Tom Parker Donegan, 19, of Fairfield. All four now face federal indictment in connection with the robbery.

Court records show that Faasisila and Palestino have since been released by a judge while the case continues. Investigators believe the Fremont robbery may be connected to another jewellery heist that occurred three months later in San Ramon, California. In that case, about £1.28 million worth of jewellery was stolen from Heller Jewelers.

Authorities say 19 people have been either charged or convicted in connection with the San Ramon robbery. Just last month, two men were convicted at trial of conspiracy and robbery related to that incident. Police have not yet arrested all individuals believed to have taken part in the Fremont raid, and the investigation remains ongoing.
