Meghan Markle takes ‘lead’ as ‘awkward’ Prince Harry ‘lurks behind’: Expert
Share0Prince Harry showed once again that he knows when to let his wife take center stage, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a joint appearance at the TIME100 Summit on Wednesday, April 23. While Meghan Markle exuded confidence and charm in the spotlight, Prince Harry took on a more reserved, supportive role—an approach that didn’t go unnoticed.
According to body language expert Judi James, Meghan “very much [took] the lead” during their high-profile New York outing, while Harry “lurks behind” and adopted what James described as the position of a “spare.”
“Whether Harry’s leading or lurking here, he appears to be in the role of ‘spare,’ displaying some awkward-looking body language poses while a more assured Meghan takes the starring role,” James told DailyMail.com.
James highlighted Meghan’s polished demeanor, noting her warm greetings and her signature “celebrity wilt” gesture—hands gently hanging from bent wrists—as key indicators of her public poise and confidence.
“It suggests a form of specialness,” James explained. “I don’t need my hands as I have people to open my doors and tow me along.” While Meghan mingled with guests and worked the cameras, Harry stood quietly nearby, wearing a noticeably more serious expression.

Though his chest was confidently splayed, James observed that his bent knees, likened to a “frog ’s-leg” stance, gave off an air of discomfort. “His chest might be splayed, but the way his knees are bent in a ‘frog ’s-leg’ position creates an air of awkwardness,” she said.
Even as they exited the event, James noted that Harry unintentionally shifted the spotlight back to Meghan, reinforcing the public dynamic of her as the focal point of attention. During the summit, Meghan participated in a panel discussion, while Harry remained in the audience, ever-supportive.
It was clear from the moment they arrived that Meghan, a former actress well-versed in public appearances, naturally embraced the spotlight. “[Meghan] worked the cameras,” James added, affirming that she came across as the “star arrival.”
Their appearance at the TIME100 Summit underscores the evolving dynamic between the Sussexes, with Meghan often leading the charge in public forums, while Harry remains a steady presence by her side. As the couple continues to shape their post-royal public lives, this balance of star power and support appears to be a defining element of their partnership.
