Meghan Markle’s Former Bodyguard Defends Her Against ‘Dictator’ Claims

Meghan Markle’s former bodyguard, Steve Davies, has come forward to defend the Duchess of Sussex following allegations from former staff members accusing her of being a “dictator in high heels.” Davies, who worked closely with Meghan during her transition from actress to duchess, shared his perspective on the unfair portrayal of her in the media and within the Royal Family, told GB News.

“She receives a lot of unfair criticism for being difficult to work with, and the portrayal of her as a villain within the Royal Family is misleading,” Davies said. He went on to address claims that Meghan was difficult to work for, dismissing them as inaccurate. “She gets a bad rap for being a not very good person to work with, that she was this evil person in the Royal Family,” he added.

Davies, who first met Meghan in 2016 when he was hired by NBC to protect her during her time on Suits, had a unique vantage point as she transitioned from Hollywood to royalty. “I saw her, from working at the studio to working with charities to working with dog walkers and cleaners,” he explained. “There’s one huge lesson I learned from her: It’s give respect to get respect.”

Reflecting on the intense scrutiny Meghan faced, Davies described the overwhelming media attention that came with her relationship with Prince Harry. “It was stressful for her — all the publicity,” he said, adding that Meghan became “paranoid” due to the constant presence of paparazzi around her Toronto home. He recalled, “We had problems with drones, vehicles chasing us. It was a nightmare.”

Despite the pressure, Davies emphasized how down-to-earth Meghan remained. He shared a touching memory of helping her do something as simple as grocery shopping, a freedom she was denied due to security concerns. “The previous security team wouldn’t let her do that, so I pushed the cart around the grocery store, and she was putting stuff in it. She really enjoyed that,” Davies said.

When he later visited Meghan in the UK, he likened her life to being in a “goldfish bowl” and noted how difficult it was for her to adjust to Buckingham Palace controlling her public relations. “Nobody had a bad word to say about her [in Toronto]. Even with the pressure that she was under, she was warm and considerate all the time.”

Davies also highlighted Meghan’s kindness and generosity, saying, “What might surprise people most is how friendly she is and what a big heart she has. She’s great to her fans, and she would go out of her way to help people.”

Though Davies no longer works for Meghan, he remains close with her. “My wife and I got invited to the wedding, that’s how close we became,” he revealed, adding that they still exchange emails on birthdays and holidays. “I would work with her again, not a problem at all. She was a good person to work for, and she still is a good person.”
