Lauren Chen Reveals the Surprising Reality of Meghan and Harry’s U.S. Popularity After Royal Departure

Lauren Chen, a political commentator, has expressed skepticism about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s popularity in the United States, describing their situation as a “rude awakening.” Chen critiqued the couple’s foray into the media industry following their step back from royal duties in 2020.

Meghan and Harry have been involved in various projects, including writing memoirs, hosting podcasts, and producing documentaries about their royal experiences. Chen, however, doubts the American public’s interest in the couple, countering Meghan’s expectation that her marriage to Harry would boost her popularity in the States.

Speaking to GB News, Chen highlighted the conclusion of the Sussexes’ Spotify deal and questioned the success of their other media ventures, including their Netflix collaboration. She noted that their Netflix docuseries received largely negative feedback, citing its low audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and its role in straining the couple’s ties with the Royal Family.

Since relocating to the US, Harry and Meghan’s company, Archewell Productions, has embarked on several ambitious media projects. Their partnership with Spotify culminated in a 33-minute holiday podcast featuring celebrity guests like Elton John and Tyler Perry. Meghan also published her first book, “The Bench,” inspired by a poem she wrote for Harry, under a deal with Penguin Random House.

Despite these efforts, the Netflix docuseries, filled with revealing insights about royal life, has been particularly controversial. Chen argues that the couple’s strategy of relying on their royal status without contributing significantly to the public sphere is less effective in the US compared to the UK, where active and respected members of the Royal Family are more traditionally embraced.

Chen’s comments reflect a broader conversation about the Sussexes’ transition from royal life to independent media figures and the challenges they face in maintaining public interest and support in their new endeavors.
