The tragic death of 30-year-old Sophie Evans has left a community in shock, as disturbing details of her alleged murder by Richard Jones, 50, unfolded in Swansea Crown Court. Sophie, a mother of two, was found face down in a bath towel at a home in Llanelli, Wales. Jones, the father of Sophie’s partner, Jamie Davies, is accused of strangling her before calmly visiting a nearby bakery, according to the Mirror.
Prosecutors presented CCTV footage showing Jones purchasing a tuna roll and custard slice shortly after the alleged murder. He was then seen returning to the house with the snacks before leaving moments later carrying a yellow box.
Jurors were told Jones allegedly confessed to the crime during a phone call with his ex-partner Tracey Thompson, saying he killed Sophie. He later messaged Thompson, asking her to “Don’t say a word please.” A post-mortem examination revealed Sophie suffered multiple injuries, including defensive wounds, and died from compression to the neck.
When police arrested Jones, they discovered a notepad in his car with a chilling note: “I got scammed and rinsed by my own son so I dealt with it myself. Had no other choice.” Jones claimed he had been financially exploited, leading him to lose his temper. At the time of her death, Sophie was in a relationship with Jamie Davies and had moved into his home in April 2023. Jamie was incarcerated at HMP Swansea, facing charges of drug supply and money laundering.
Sophie had been paying the mortgage on the property, but the court heard Jones felt betrayed after being “duped” into signing a document falsely designating him as the landlord and Sophie as a tenant. Prosecutor Michael Jones KC described the document as fraudulent. In the days leading up to the alleged murder, Jones reportedly conducted internet searches such as “Is paternity fraud a crime in the UK?” and “I was duped into signing a mortgage, is there a way out of it?”
While Jones has admitted to manslaughter, he denies the charge of murder. The trial continues as jurors weigh the evidence and testimony presented in this deeply troubling case. Sophie’s death has left her family and friends devastated, as they await justice for a young mother whose life was tragically cut short.
