Lulu Opens Up About Her Evolving Accent and Shuts Down Retirement Rumors

Lulu’s rise to stardom began at the young age of 15 when she signed with Decca Records, making waves with her breakout hit Shout. Over the decades, she has enjoyed a successful career as a singer, songwriter, and actress. However, fans have often been intrigued by her evolving accent, and the 75-year-old star has now shared the real reason behind her changing dialect.

In a recent interview, the Relight My Fire singer jokingly admitted to having a “phoney” accent. Dividing her time between London and Los Angeles, Lulu revealed that her Scottish accent has mellowed over the years, leaving her with what she describes as a “transatlantic” twang.

“My accent changes every five minutes—it depends on who I’m with,” she explained. Speaking to Woman’s Weekly, she humorously added, “I’m just a phoney!”

Lulu’s shifting accent gained attention earlier this year during her appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, where viewers were surprised by the star’s new sound, reported Daily Express.

Born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire, in 1948, Lulu was discovered at 14 by Marion Massey, who became her manager and helped launch her career. Reflecting on her accent, Lulu previously shared with Radio Scotland, “I lived with my manager’s parents in their apartment in St John’s Wood and developed an English accent very quickly. My mother was livid.” Despite this, she emphasized, “I think I am Scottish, even if my accent changes, no matter where I am.”

Meanwhile, Lulu has addressed rumors about her retirement from touring. She reassured fans that more shows are on the horizon. “There will be more gigs—definitely. In fact, there will be a second part of my tour [Champagne for Lulu] starting in November because a lot of people couldn’t get there, and it was sold out,” she told Woman’s Weekly.

This announcement follows the conclusion of her spring tour, confirming that Lulu has no plans to slow down her decades-spanning career.
