Lorraine Kelly Saddened by Parents Turning to Baby Banks for Basics This Christmas
0Lorraine Kelly has expressed her heartbreak over the growing number of families relying on baby banks for essential items this Christmas. The 64-year-old ITV host, who became a grandmother in August when her daughter Rosie welcomed baby Billie, is championing Lorraine’s Big Baby Bank Appeal, a campaign to support struggling families.
Speaking to Bristol Live, Lorraine shared her concern: “I was so sad to hear of the stories of parents having to turn to baby banks for all kinds of basics from nappies to cots and clothes.” She continued, “Not just people struggling because they can’t find work, but those in employment who don’t earn enough to give their babies all that they need through no fault of their own. It’s wonderful that baby banks are there to give support and dignity but how I wish we didn’t actually need them. I know our wonderful viewers will help.”
The campaign comes as the UK faces a stark reality: an estimated 4.3 million children live in poverty, with one million on the brink of destitution amid the rising cost of living. In response, supermarket chain Morrisons is backing Lorraine’s appeal, setting up 497 donation stations across its stores for two weeks.
Lorraine, embracing her new role as a grandmother, recalled visiting a local baby bank and meeting parents in need. She spoke about a mother who had once relied on the baby bank when she was young and later donated to it after getting back on her feet. Sadly, the woman is now pregnant again and facing financial hardship after losing her job, reported by Daily Record.
Lorraine reflected on the experience: “I also donated some of the clothes and equipment that Billie has grown out of and helped sort out some of the little outfits and blankets donated.”
Grateful for her granddaughter’s fortunate upbringing, Lorraine added, “It’s so important that babies are fed and clothed properly and given the best start in life. My granddaughter Billie is so lucky to have two working parents who can give her all she needs.”
Describing Billie as “the light of my life,” Lorraine praised her daughter Rosie and son-in-law Steve for their parenting skills. “They are brilliant parents. I love having them to visit and getting lots of cuddles,” she said.
Lorraine hopes her viewers will rally behind the appeal, ensuring struggling families receive the help they desperately need this holiday season.
