On Snapchat, Payne posted a shirtless photo of himself alongside his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, giving followers a glimpse into his day. He shared that they were “enjoying coffee” around 1 p.m. and had plans to go horse riding later, even humorously commenting on the challenges of playing polo. “It’s hard to do,” Payne quipped, joking about the neck and back aches he might endure from swinging the mallet, reports the Express US.
In a series of posts, the singer also showed off his love for art, sharing images of artwork around him. He lightheartedly uploaded a photo of a black dog dozing between his legs, playfully challenging his followers to “caption this.” These interactions came just 45 minutes before his death was announced.
Tragically, Payne fell from the fourth floor of his hotel in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires. The cause of his death remains unclear, and authorities are investigating whether it was a suicide or a tragic accident. Eyewitnesses told TMZ that the singer had been acting oddly in the hours leading up to his death, at one point even smashing his laptop. He was later escorted back to his room by hotel staff, told Liverpool Echo.
Payne first rose to fame as a member of One Direction, the boy band formed on the X Factor in 2010 by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger. Alongside bandmates Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles, Payne helped catapult the group to global stardom. However, the band went on hiatus in 2016 following Zayn Malik’s departure in 2015.
