Galliano Leaves After Transforming Fashion’s Deconstructive Aesthetic

Luxury fashion house Maison Margiela has confirmed the departure of its celebrated creative director John Galliano, marking the end of a groundbreaking creative era for the avant-garde brand.

The departure, described as amicable, was confirmed in a statement by OTB Group CEO and founder Renzo Rosso, who also hinted at the possibility of future collaborations. Galliano’s decade-long tenure was defined by critically acclaimed collections that reimagined the house’s signature deconstructivity aesthetic while pushing the boundaries of conceptual fashion design.

While the immediate reasons for Galliano’s exit remain undisclosed, industry insiders speculate the move signals a strategic shift for Maison Margiela. A successor to Galliano’s role has yet to be announced, leaving the fashion world eagerly watching for the next chapter.

Galliano, known for his transformative work at Dior and his own namesake label, brought his unmistakable dramatic flair to Margiela. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to revive his creative spirit.

“For now, I want to express my immense gratitude. I continue to atone, and I will never stop dreaming. Gratitude to Renzo Rosso, who, in inviting me to assume the position of Artistic Director in the house that Martin built, gave me the greatest, most precious gift, allowing me the opportunity to once again find my creative voice when I had become voiceless.

“My wings mended, ten years later, I am forever grateful for this safe space to create and his undying support. Gratitude to my fashion family for this life-saving creative moment and the place we have built together; to my teams, whose support has been tender and courageous and who have walked with me along this narrow pathway to the here and now. Gratitude to my atelier, my ‘A’ team, devout in belief and dedicated to style and technique,” Galliano shared in his statement.

Renzo Rosso also paid tribute to Galliano’s impact: “Working with John was one of the most significant and impactful experiences of my life. He mentored me and showed me his vision, enriching me culturally and allowing me to bring some of that vision and culture to the rest of the Group. I feel privileged to have worked with two legends like Martin and John. Martin made this house a reference and an icon, John made it the most cutting-edge couture house in the world. Together we have done something incredible that will be forever engraved in the history of fashion.”

With Galliano’s departure, the fashion world is now left speculating who will take the reins at Maison Margiela and where Galliano’s next creative journey may lead. All eyes will remain firmly on this pivotal moment in fashion history.
