“Don’t Give Up on Us”: Jimmy Kimmel’s Christmas Message Takes Aim at Trump and Reassures U.S. Allies

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel delivered a sharp and humorous critique of President Donald Trump during an alternate Christmas address that doubled as an appeal to America’s allies abroad.

Kimmel was invited to give a Christmas Day speech in the United Kingdom as a tongue-in-cheek alternative to the monarch’s traditional annual address. The message aired on Channel 4 and blended comedy with pointed commentary about the state of U.S. politics and America’s role in the world.

Throughout the address, Kimmel acknowledged the turmoil he said Trump has caused both domestically and internationally, while urging allied nations not to lose faith in the United States. Speaking directly to viewers across the Atlantic, Kimmel leaned into pop culture references and self-deprecating humor to soften a serious underlying message.

“Look, I know (from the musical Hamilton) that our countries didn’t start off on the greatest note, but I also know (from seeing Love Actually) that we have a special relationship,” Kimmel said. “So, if I might speak on behalf of my country – which I most certainly do not – our message to you, our friends across the pond this Christmas is: don’t give up on us.”

Kimmel went on to describe the U.S. as a nation in a rough patch, framing the moment as temporary rather than permanent. “We’re going through a bit of a wobble right now, but we’ll come around,” he said. “It may not seem like it, but we love you guys. We even love the things about you that you don’t like.”

He continued by singling out British pop culture exports with playful sarcasm. “Like Simon Cowell, for instance,” Kimmel joked. “We are not bright. We’re Americans. No one knows better than you that we’re always just a little bit late to the game, but do we come through in the end? Maybe.”

The address struck a balance between satire and sincerity, poking fun at American shortcomings while acknowledging the frustration many U.S. allies feel watching American politics unfold. Kimmel’s remarks suggested patience rather than despair, even as he admitted uncertainty about the future.

“Give us about three years. Please,” Kimmel said. “Thank you for your patience, and thank you for Spider-Man. Merry Christmas, and happy holidays.” The speech stood out as a rare moment where late-night comedy crossed into diplomatic territory, using humor to send a message of reassurance at a time of strained international relationships.
