The Chase Sparks Outrage After Costly Question Slip-Up

Wednesday night’s episode of The Chase left fans raging after what many saw as a major blunder that may have cost the team a life-changing cash prize.

With Bradley Walsh doing his usual quick-fire hosting, things kicked off with a bang. Gary from Hull banked a respectable £6,000, while Sarah from Clitheroe brought in £7,000, already dreaming of a new holiday wardrobe for her trip to Australia. Then came Ailsa from Fife, a strawberry farmer who stunned everyone by going for the bold £44,000 high offer — and winning it. Even Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis was impressed, telling her: “You deserve that with the bravery of going for it”, reported the Express.

But then came 23-year-old George from London, who stirred the pot big time. After nabbing £7,000 in his cash builder, he shocked viewers by opting for the minus £9,000 offer in the head-to-head, knocking the team’s total down to £48,000 going into the final round. That move alone sparked debate online, but the real controversy came in the dying seconds of the game.

As time ticked away in the final chase, Bradley fired off the question: “The term carjack is a blend of car and what other word.” George quickly shot back with: “Hijacked.”

But Bradley immediately overruled him with a curt: “Hijack!” and pushed on. With no time left on the clock to challenge it, the moment passed — but not for viewers.

Fans were furious, with many insisting George’s answer should have been allowed. One fan tweeted: “Yet again #TheChase is a joke. Hijack/Hijacked. Who gives a f**k.” Another fumed: “So harsh that Bradley couldn’t accept hijacked instead of hijack,” and someone else added: “Hijack not hijacked is a bit harsh. Especially at the speed Brad is reading.”

Some even joked (or not) about writing to Ofcom. “I’m going to write a strongly-worded email,” one viewer said, while others called for ITV to revisit how strictly it enforces answers, especially when they’re virtually correct.

Despite the strong team effort, they were caught with just 13 seconds left on the clock. The Menace admitted he “didn’t see it coming,” blaming the loss on the team answering questions too slowly.” And Bradley didn’t help soothe the sting, ending with the killer line: “And the £48,000 turns to dust just like that.”
