Tragic Loss: Boy, 6, and Family Killed After Recently Losing His Father

A devastating car crash in southern Brazil has claimed the lives of a 6-year-old boy, his mother, and three other relatives, just over a year after the boy’s father died in a separate tragic accident.

The family was returning home from a coastal trip in Florianópolis when their vehicle collided with a double-trailer lorry on the BR-280 motorway near Porto União on Tuesday, September 24. All five passengers were killed instantly.

The victims have been identified as Macir Mários da Silva, 50; Solizete Oldoni, 47; Fernanda Mários, 24; Taís Helena Cardoso Borges de Lima, 28; and 6-year-old Yago Samuel. Fernanda was Macir’s daughter, while Taís, Yago’s mother, was Macir’s sister-in-law.

This tragedy follows the death of Yago’s father, Thiago da Silva, who was killed in a work accident in May 2023 when he was struck by a street cleaning vehicle. Thiago was also Taís’s partner and Macir’s brother, told the Mirror.

The family had initially set off on their return journey to Pato Branco in two separate cars. However, one of the vehicles broke down and had to be towed. Fernanda’s husband, who had been driving the other car, continued in the recovery vehicle while the rest of the family traveled in the remaining car.

Sadly, the family’s journey ended in catastrophe when their vehicle collided with the lorry. Fernanda’s husband, who was not involved in the crash, was left in shock and had to be hospitalized. The 27-year-old truck driver involved in the crash was unharmed.

This incident comes just months after the young boy, Yago, lost his father in another tragic accident. Yago had been living with his mother, Taís, and spending time with his extended family, including his aunt, uncle, and cousin, all of whom were with him in the car when the crash occurred.

Florianópolis, the capital of Brazil’s Santa Catarina state, is known for its beautiful beaches and mountainous landscapes. The BR-280 motorway, where the crash happened, is a 642-kilometer-long road connecting various cities across the state.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, as the community mourns the loss of the family, whose lives have been marked by back-to-back tragedies.
