Eamonn Holmes Stuns Fans with Surprising Confession: ‘I’ve Never Watched Dad’s Army’ After Heartbreaking Loss

Eamonn Holmes has shared his candid thoughts on the classic BBC sitcom Dad’s Army, admitting that he had never watched the show as a child, despite its immense popularity. The 65-year-old broadcaster and GB News presenter confessed this on X, formerly Twitter, after tuning in to a special airing of the show on December 30.

Dad’s Army, which originally aired from 1968 to 1977, is set during World War II and centers around the Home Guard, a volunteer defense force. Despite its continued popularity and appeal, Holmes revealed he missed out on the sitcom during his childhood. “When I was a kid I never watched Dad’s Army. My loss but it’s meant subsequent years of laughter and appreciation. Tonight’s on @BBCOne was ‘The Love of Three Oranges.’ What actors, what characters, what scripts, and what Oranges!” he tweeted.

His post quickly caught the attention of fans, many of whom shared their fond memories of the show. One user commented, “I’m obsessed with Dad’s Army, over 80 episodes of comical genius. The movie is good too.” Another added, “You can get the entire Dad’s Army on DVD and it’s not that expensive either, we have the set and it was a joy to go through. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore sadly.”

Others expressed their agreement with Holmes’s praise, with one person commenting, “You’re so right. They are all so brilliant,” while another shared, “I used to watch it as a kid but never appreciated how good it was until I was quite a bit older.”

Despite missing out on the show in his youth, Holmes has certainly come to appreciate Dad’s Army as an adult, and he voiced his admiration for the sitcom that continues to bring joy during the festive period.

In addition to Holmes’s newfound appreciation, Dad’s Army fans are in for another treat as a handwritten script for the beloved show is set to be auctioned. The script for “Sgt. – Save My Boy!” was penned by co-creator David Croft and could fetch up to £5,000. It will be sold at Auctioneum in Bristol on December 31, after being uncovered on Antiques Roadshow earlier this year.
