Eamonn Holmes Criticizes Labour’s Pension Plans Amid Concerns Over “£22 Billion Black Hole”
0GB News presenter Eamonn Holmes weighed in on Labour’s latest proposal to address the “£22 billion black hole” which they claim was created by an “irresponsible” Tory government. On today’s broadcast, Holmes reacted to plans aimed at reducing the tax-free lump sum for pensioners, expressing concern for his own savings.
He asked, “Should I be taking money out of my pension before they do?” Political commentator Theo Usherwood responded bluntly, “I think you should be worried.”

Holmes listened as details emerged about Labour’s proposal to crack down on “wealthy” pensioners, who would be the most affected by the changes. Confused by the move, he questioned, “Why are they so keen to plug black holes? We’ve had holes blacker than this for quite some time.”
The presenter, whose net worth is estimated at around £4 million, expressed disbelief at Labour’s approach, remarking, “Why are Labour acting so Conservative on this?” The discussion arose following Rachel Reeves’ proposal to reduce the tax-free lump sum to £100,000, down from the current cap, as per reports Daily Express.
This news has sparked outrage, particularly as unions have recently received favorable pay offers while millions of pensioners face potential cuts to their Winter Fuel Allowances. Campaigners have warned that such changes could force low-income retirees to choose between food and heating.
Reflecting the frustration of viewers, Usherwood said, “Voters turned around and said, ‘Well hold on a minute, this is the narrative, the same old Labour being irresponsible with taxpayers’ money.'” He added that Labour’s claim of inheriting a £22 billion black hole from the Tories was “dubious” and “disputed.”

Holmes voiced his frustration, declaring, “They don’t have to claw it back from the rest of us.”
Critics have labeled Labour’s proposal as part of a larger “war on pensioners.” Currently, savers can withdraw up to 25 percent of their pension pot tax-free after turning 55, up to a maximum of £268,275. However, as Holmes highlighted, the proposed limit could be reduced to just £100,000.
“If they go ahead with this, it will have a significant impact and it will be subject to legal challenge as well because that wasn’t what people signed up to when they saved and put that money away,” Usherwood asserted.
Adding to concerns, there are fears the new government might also eliminate the free bus pass scheme and abolish the Single Person’s Council Tax Discount.
