There was an emotional moment on The One Show this Thursday (April 10), when presenters Lauren Laverne and JB Gill paused the upbeat program to share some devastating news with viewers. While chatting through the day’s stories and welcoming guests like Beverley Knight, Harlan Coben, and Nick Grimshaw, the pair took time out to honour a much-loved member of the One Show family – Brenda, who had been featured just last week.
“Before we introduce you to this week’s star, we unfortunately have some sad news to share,” JB began, as reported by The Mirror. Lauren then added, “Last week, you may remember we thanked Brenda, who raised over £170,000 for research into cancer treatment while dealing with her cancer diagnosis. And this week, we heard the very sad news that Brenda has died.”
It was clear the tribute came from the heart. Lauren continued, “So, on behalf of everyone at The One Show, we want to say to all of Brenda’s family and friends that our thoughts and our love are with you, and we feel very lucky to have been able to celebrate the amazing work that she did. That is what One Big Thank You is all about”, reported the Express.
Brenda had been featured in the show’s “One Big Thank You” segment the previous Thursday (April 3), where her inspiring story was shared with the nation. Diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2000, Brenda made it her mission to help others even as she was recovering from the illness herself.
After reaching remission, she threw herself into fundraising, organising everything from afternoon teas and charity balls to garden parties and sponsored walks. Her events regularly drew over 100 people and raised vital funds for cancer research. Even as her health declined during a second cancer diagnosis, she kept going – hosting her 15th and final charity ball before stepping back.
Her friends described her as someone truly special. “The last month has been a real trial for our family, for Brenda and her friends, really,” said Nigel, a close friend. Another friend, Tony, added: “She’s an amazing lady, she’s just one in a million.”
To honour her efforts, The One Show had arranged a touching surprise in Cornwall, roping in Strictly Come Dancing star Kai Widdrington to help celebrate her legacy. It was a moment that left viewers emotional – a raw and heartfelt reminder of the incredible impact one person can make.
