Heavy Rain Causes Rail Delays for London Commuters

Londoners faced significant rail delays on Thursday morning following intense overnight rain that resulted in flooding across the city.

A statement from National Rail reported the closure of all lines between London Kings Cross/Moorgate and Stevenage in Hertfordshire due to multiple incidents. The advisory noted potential cancellations, delays up to 90 minutes, or changes in train routes, with substantial disruption anticipated until 09:00.

Commuters were cautioned against using routes passing through Stevenage as damage to overhead electric wires led to the suspension of all rail services via that station. In a separate event, services through Tulse Hill in southern London were disrupted due to an emergency.

Besides the rail issues, many roads across London also faced flooding challenges. The London Fire Brigade, addressing the situation on Wednesday night, urged, “If you’re on the roads, avoid driving through floodwaters. Even a foot of moving water at 6mph can sweep a car off. Consider alternative routes.”

A yellow weather advisory was in effect for the city until 3 a.m., forewarning potential disruptions in bus and train services, and likely longer travel times due to road flooding.

While the morning in London might see some sun, it’s predicted to become overcast by midday, with rain resuming in the afternoon but expected to subside by evening.

Commenting on the forecast, Met Office’s Aidan McGivern mentioned, “Following the rain band’s clearance early Thursday, sunny intervals will be succeeded by showers. With low pressure remaining in proximity to the UK, cooler conditions and brisk nights are anticipated as the weekend approaches.”
