A highly dangerous prisoner violently attacked a prison officer at HMP Belmarsh, London, using an improvised weapon and shouting hateful slurs, court documents reveal. The incident occurred on October 23, 2022, at approximately 2:40 am, leaving staff members injured and property damaged.
Aklakar Rahman, 38, was unlocked for lunch when the assault took place. According to an incident report obtained by Metro, Rahman, who is already serving a life sentence for previous violent offences, attacked an officer by stabbing her in the head and throat with a sharpened plastic spoon. He also threw a bin at the officer and two other key workers before escalating the attack.
The report details that Rahman shouted “kill all kaffirs, death to all kaffirs” during the assault, a derogatory term targeting non-Muslims. Despite being restrained, he continued to thrash out violently. Prosecutor Justin Hayhoe stated, “The defendant was clearly the leading role and directing (the other man) what to do,” highlighting Rahman’s dominant behavior during the attack.
CCTV footage from the hallway captured Rahman approaching the officer’s door, banging on it with his fist, kicking the door, and shouting profanities. Upon noticing the camera, Rahman turned it away but was still partially recorded as he briefly left to retrieve a Jerry can of diesel from his parked van. He was seen cutting a hosepipe to size before returning to pour the diesel through the letterbox. Fortunately, no diesel was found inside the flat.
Police arrived swiftly to find Rahman outside smoking a cigarette. The victim, a young female officer in her 20s, sustained lacerations to the back of her head and superficial cuts to her neck. The damage to the property amounted to £4,000, and the officer was hospitalized following the attack.
In court, Rahman appeared remorseful but continued to exhibit aggressive behavior. During the trial at the Old Bailey, he admitted to five charges of attempted wounding and was found guilty of four additional serious charges of attempted murder. He also confessed to six attempted assaults on emergency workers and three charges of possessing sharpened plastic pieces in prison.
Defender Ian Metcalfe argued that Rahman had “absolutely no intention” to harm and acknowledged his intoxication and mental health issues at the time of the incident. However, the severity of Rahman’s actions and his history of violence weighed heavily on the jury.
Prosecutor Alistair Richardson described Rahman as a “highly dangerous man,” emphasizing the threat he posed to prison staff. “He was a menace to society and a continual threat within the prison environment,” Richardson asserted.
During sentencing, Recorder Michael Blakey condemned Rahman’s actions, stating, “Clearly you have a problem with alcohol, and you clearly have a temper. For whatever reasons, your thoughts were muddled by alcohol.” Rahman was sentenced to an additional two years in prison, reflecting the gravity of his latest offenses.
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) responded to the incident, stating that two prison officers sustained “minor injuries,” with one requiring hospital treatment. The attack was one of over 200 violent incidents reported between November 2021 and October 2022 at HMP Belmarsh, highlighting ongoing security challenges within the high-security facility.
A Prison Service spokesperson reaffirmed their commitment to staff safety, stating, “We do not tolerate attacks against our hardworking staff and our £125 million investment in prison security is making their jobs safer.” The spokesperson also acknowledged the need for continuous improvements to prevent such violent incidents in the future.
The brutal assault by Aklakar Rahman underscores the persistent dangers faced by prison officers and the critical importance of maintaining robust security measures within correctional facilities.
