A third teenager has now been arrested and charged in connection with the death of 15-year-old Amen Teklay, who was found seriously injured on a Glasgow street earlier this month. Amen was discovered on Clarendon Street in Maryhill around 10.30 pm on Wednesday, March 5, reported Sky News.
Despite emergency services rushing to the scene, the schoolboy was pronounced dead shortly after. Police Scotland confirmed over the weekend that a 16-year-old male has been arrested and charged and is due to appear in Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday, March 24. A report has also been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
This latest arrest comes after two other teens were charged about the incident. A 14-year-old boy has already appeared in court, accused of murder, assault, and carrying an offensive weapon. He made no plea and was remanded in custody for further examination. Another boy, aged 15, faces charges of assault and carrying an offensive weapon. He was also committed for further examination but was granted bail and will return to court at a later date.
Amen, who moved to Glasgow with his dad eight years ago, was a pupil at St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School. His sister Delina, 17, spoke emotionally to BBC Scotland about the loss of her younger brother. The family, originally from Eritrea, came to the UK as refugees, and Amen had big dreams for the future.
“He was the one I could go and talk to about anything. We grew up together so we were very close,” Delina said. “This was very unexpected and shocking for us. I just think this is a dream and I’m going to wake up tomorrow. I’m still in denial. My dad is devastated, he’s not eating at all or drinking anything. We’re all devastated, it’s shocking.”
Amen had aspirations of becoming a doctor, an engineer, or even a basketball player. His school described him as “bright and friendly,” with headteacher Claire McInally calling his death “a shock to the school community.” “Amen was a friendly and much-loved young man who was really interested in music and the media. He was bright and showed great promise,” she said.
Jamie O’Neill, Amen’s support worker at Kingsway Community Connections, spoke of the impact the tragedy has had. “We’ve lost Amen and we’ve seen how it’s affecting his family,” he said. “We’re trying to be strong for them… and support the young people who knew him and looked up to him, who need a space to grieve.”
