Stephen Colbert Responds to The Late Show’s Ending, Calls on Paramount to Undo Cancellation
Stephen Colbert has humorously called on Paramount to “uncancel one of its best shows,” addressing the upcoming end of The Late Show during his opening monologue. In a tongue-in-cheek remark aimed at both his network and President Donald Trump, Colbert, 61, acknowledged the end of his long-running talk show, which will conclude in May 2026.
Since taking over in 2015 after David Letterman’s retirement, Colbert has become synonymous with late-night TV. However, the entire Late Show, not just Colbert’s decade-long tenure, will come to a close next year, a move that has sparked criticism across the industry.

Fellow talk show host Jimmy Kimmel called the decision to cancel the show “nonsensical,” voicing concerns over the reasons behind the cancellation. The show’s high production costs and declining advertising revenue are believed to be contributing factors. However, it has also been reported that a settlement agreement between Donald Trump and Paramount influenced the decision to end The Late Show.
In a statement following the cancellation announcement, Paramount expressed admiration for Colbert and his team, saying, “Our admiration, affection, and respect for the talents of Stephen Colbert and his incredible team made this agonising decision even more difficult. With much gratitude, we look forward to honouring Stephen and celebrating the show over the next 10 months alongside its millions of fans and viewers.”
Colbert has not taken the news quietly, and in his monologue, he used the opportunity to criticize the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. He quipped, “Wow. I’ve got to say, if my company has got that kind of green, I’m sure they can afford to uncancel one of their best shows.” After pausing for applause, Colbert added, “Thank you, thank you, please, please have a seat, everybody. CBS, you heard the people, bring back The Equalizer.
We need our Queen to return. Why do you think America has become so unequalized?” As the clock ticks down to the final months of The Late Show, Colbert’s playful jabs highlight the ongoing conversation about the show’s cancellation and the state of late-night television in general.
