Brave Scots Schoolboy Who Defied Blood Cancer Becomes Face of UK-Wide Campaign

In an inspiring tale of courage and recovery, seven-year-old Fraser Wood from Aberdeen has become the face of hope as the poster boy for a new campaign by Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People. Fraser, who battled blood cancer with more than 30 blood transfusions, extensive chemotherapy, and numerous medical procedures, is now in remission after a grueling 28-month treatment period.

Fraser’s ordeal began over the summer of 2022 when he suddenly became pale, lethargic, and devoid of the energy to play. His condition worsened rapidly, and he was rushed in an air ambulance from his home in Aberdeen to the intensive care unit at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow after developing severe breathing difficulties. Doctors discovered that fluid had accumulated around his heart and lungs, caused by a tumor pressing on the blood vessels in his chest.

His parents, Louise Pope, 30, and Jensen Wood, 31, were devastated by the news as x-rays revealed the alarming condition, reporter by Daily Record. Diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma, Fraser faced an uphill battle as he underwent months of intensive treatment. The young boy lost all his hair from chemotherapy and struggled to walk after enduring bouts of infection, which meant he could not play with other children while being far from home. His brave fight also kept him separated from his little sister Freya, 4, who was cared for by relatives in Aberdeen during his long hospital stays.

Despite these harrowing challenges, Fraser remained remarkably resilient. He spent his fifth birthday in hospital, opening his presents amid chemotherapy sessions, yet his indomitable spirit shone through. On December 9 last year, Fraser rang the bell at Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, symbolizing the end of his arduous treatment journey. Now in remission, he has returned to Tullos Primary School full-time, resuming his education after missing his first days due to cancer.

In recognition of his extraordinary strength, Fraser has been awarded a Cancer Research UK for Children & Young People Star Award. His photograph, capturing his triumphant spirit, will be featured in posters across approximately 500 of the charity’s shops throughout Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, and Wales this spring.

Mum Louise expressed her joy and relief, saying: “His hair has grown back and his energy has returned. It’s wonderful to watch him getting his strength back and to know that he’s come such a long way. We’re excited to see Fraser’s poster. Knowing Fraser’s story could make a difference to other children like him means so much to us, so we hope people will show their support.” She added, “Fraser is like a completely different child now.”

Cancer Research UK spokeswoman for Scotland, Lisa Adams, commented: “A cancer diagnosis is heartbreaking at any age but it can be particularly devastating for youngsters. “We’re honored that Fraser is featured in our campaign to help drive nominations for more inspirational children like him, so we can put them in the spotlight where they belong.” Fraser’s journey stands as a powerful beacon of hope, inspiring others to fight and overcome adversity.
