Her Chilling Text to Mum Turned Terrifying When She Realized the Truth

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a seemingly innocent joke text sent by Maureen Branigan, 30, to her mother Debbie, 52, became a tragic omen of her untimely death. The incident unfolded after the two spent a day together in Philadelphia, engaging in everyday activities like grocery shopping and preparing ingredients for a hearty beef stew.

After enjoying dinner, Maureen, an only child, settled in front of the TV while Debbie decided to drive home amidst a predicted snowstorm set to hit the city. Debbie’s residence was merely three blocks away from Maureen’s, making the short drive seemingly safe despite the inclement weather, according to the Mirror. However, Debbie, who battles kidney disease and type 2 diabetes, had previously expressed concerns about the slippery conditions, often joking about the possibility of slipping and breaking her neck.

Concerned for her mother’s safety, Maureen decided to check in with a sarcastic text: “Did u make it home alive lol?” [sic]. Initially, Maureen did not receive a reply but was not overly alarmed, as Debbie frequently fell asleep and usually FaceTimed her the following morning, she explained to PEOPLE.

A few hours later, Maureen’s husband, while out walking the dog, noticed that Debbie was still in her car and saw an ambulance nearby. “Immediately, I called my dad, who was at home. I told him he had to get here, and fast,” Maureen recounted to PEOPLE. “At this point, we still had no idea what was going on. The medics couldn’t tell us anything and we were stuck in limbo. Once my dad ran over, I think reality started to set in.”

The family quickly responded by hopping into Debbie’s car and following the ambulance to the hospital, which was only a three-minute drive away. During the tense car ride, communication was minimal as both Maureen and her father braced themselves for the worst. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the devastating news was delivered: Debbie had suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.

Maureen expressed her deep sorrow, stating, “Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought it [the text] would result in her dying.” She reflected on their relationship, adding, “Honestly, it wasn’t the first time I had texted her something along those lines, and it wasn’t the first time she had texted me like that, either. We morbidly joked pretty often.”

As an only child, Maureen described her bond with her mother as exceptionally close. “We were absolute best friends. Anyone who knows us could tell you we were together every single day. My mom embodied everything soft and strong simultaneously,” she shared.

Years after the tragic event, Maureen chose to share her story as part of a TikTok trend where individuals recount their final communications with loved ones. “Without a doubt, the ‘are u alive lol’ text captured a glimpse of our sense of humour,” she said. “A few people in my life have even agreed – it makes sense that this was the last text I decided to send her.”

Maureen’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact of everyday moments shared between loved ones.
