Richard Keys Wants Southgate at United After Amorim Struggles Again
Richard Keys reckons it might be time for Manchester United to think about moving on from Ruben Amorim — and he’s backing Gareth Southgate to take the job. Amorim, who came in with plenty of hype, hasn’t made the impact many expected. His side slumped to another defeat at the weekend, this time against Wolves, and are now sitting in 15th.
It’s not been smooth sailing since the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss took over in November. There’s been little progress, and now questions are swirling about whether United should stick with him or start fresh again in the summer. Amorim clearly needs a serious squad rebuild if he’s going to turn things around, but not everyone’s convinced he’s the man for it, reported the Mirror.
Speaking on beIN Sports, Keys didn’t hold back, asking: “The question is, would you trust him now, from what we’ve seen, to rebuild Manchester United with another £250m?” He followed up by throwing Southgate’s name into the mix as a possible replacement.
Southgate has been out of work since leaving the England job in the summer, but Keys thinks his success with the national team — including two European Championship finals — shows he’s more than ready for a big club role.
“He understands a modern player and what’s required in order to make the modern player feel good about himself, his football team and the club he plays for. He’s a master of manipulation and motivation,” Keys said.
There’s no doubt Southgate changed the way England were seen on the world stage. He got results and handled the pressure of the job with a calm, thoughtful approach that won him fans both inside and outside the squad. While his only club experience was at Middlesbrough — and ended in relegation — he’s made it clear he’d like another shot in club football.
Keys continued: “You cannot knock the fact he took England to two finals and was a whisker away from winning something. He is available, and he’s highly regarded as a coach… He’s grown as a coach, working with the finest talent available, into somebody who is a big club character.”
He added that plenty of people who’ve worked with Southgate speak highly of him, and that he’s someone who genuinely understands today’s footballers.
So, with Amorim still under pressure and United’s season hanging by a thread, Keys thinks the club could do worse than turning to Southgate for a reset.
