Remembering Sarah Everard From Joyful Student Days to Tragic End

Sarah Everard, once a vibrant university student seen smiling and enjoying her time at Brockwell Lido near her Brixton home, faced a tragic fate that shook Britain. On March 3, 2021, at 33, she was kidnapped, assaulted, and murdered by Wayne Couzens, a Metropolitan Police officer, while returning home from a friend’s place in Clapham. This heinous act led to a nationwide outcry over violence against women, culminating in Couzens receiving a life sentence.

In remembrance, Everard’s family has unveiled previously unseen photographs, coinciding with a BBC documentary marking three years since her untimely death. Among the images is a joyful moment from the summer of 2008, capturing Everard’s graduation from Durham University where she majored in geography.

The documentary reveals the chilling details of her abduction, where Couzens, under the guise of police duty, falsely arrested Everard using his police credentials, only to commit the gruesome crimes thereafter. Her remains were later found in a Kent woodland, far from London.

An investigation into the murder highlighted significant oversights in Couzens’ vetting process, omitting key information about his past inclinations towards violence and previous allegations of sexual offenses dating back nearly two decades. These revelations came as a shock to the investigation team, including Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin, who was initially unaware of Couzens’ association with the Metropolitan Police.

The documentary, “Sarah Everard: The Search For Justice,” set to air on BBC One, delves into the investigative journey, uncovering how a supposed protector turned predator, leaving the nation in disbelief and mourning over the loss of Sarah Everard.
