Prince Harry Faces Possible U.S. Border Trouble Over Drug Confessions—Could Be Questioned on Re-Entry
Prince Harry may face legal scrutiny the next time he attempts to re-enter the United States due to past drug use revelations made in his bestselling memoir Spare, according to U.S. immigration experts.
The Duke of Sussex, who has resided in California since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, openly admitted to experimenting with various illegal substances during his youth. Now, some critics argue those admissions could pose issues under current U.S. immigration enforcement policies.
Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation, has called for action. “He should be questioned at the US border when he returns from wherever he travels,” Gardiner told The Sun. “These drugs are illegal in the US.”
Gardiner emphasized that U.S. immigration law treats drug use seriously, regardless of a person’s celebrity status or international background. “This is a new era of immigration enforcement in the US, and the rules are being strictly enforced by the new US administration,” he added.
While Prince Harry has not been charged or accused of any crimes in relation to his admissions, his public acknowledgment of drug use — including cocaine and marijuana — has raised questions about whether proper procedures were followed when he first entered the U.S.
Some legal experts have suggested that the Department of Homeland Security could be pressured to investigate whether Harry disclosed his drug history on his visa application. Lying or omitting such details can be grounds for visa revocation or denial of re-entry.
