Police officer fired after conviction over neighbor parking dispute

After being found guilty of attacking his neighbor over a parking conflict, a police officer has been terminated from his position over the incident. On November 29, 2024, Joshua Smith was shoved by a police officer named Daniel Traynor, who was 38 years old. Smith had arrived at his home in East London to discover a car that was “blocking access to his property.”

On Monday, a misconduct hearing was held in South London. The hearing revealed that Mr. Smith then hit the officer, and the two of them ‘grappled and fell to the floor’, which resulted in the police being summoned to the residence. As a result of sliding backwards onto the ground, Mr. Smith was reportedly injured, according to the hearing.

During the proceedings that took place on November 12 at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, PC Traynor was found guilty of assault by beating. He is now appealing this verdict. Commander Andy Brittain, who concluded that his behavior was “wholly unbecoming of a police officer,” has now terminated his employment because he was judged to have engaged in severe misconduct, according to the BBC.

According to Mr. Smith, the event had a “significant impact” on his mental health and was “traumatic” for him, his partner, and his kid. He made this comment in a statement on the impact of the occurrence. He continued by saying that it was “terrifying” that a law enforcement officer would act in such a manner.

PC Traynor did not show up to the hearing because, according to a medical note, he said that he “was unfit to attend in any capacity whatsoever.” PC Traynor had ‘ made several inquiries’ to discover the owner and driver of the car on the day of the incident, according to Jennie Oborne, who was representing the competent authorities. She said this during the hearing.

After Mr. Smith had emerged from his property, the two individuals allegedly “engaged in a conversation that turned into a verbal argument,” according to the information that was acquired. Mr. Smith then went to the residence of PC Traynor in an attempt to have a conversation with the officer’s partner; however, there was no one there to answer the door.

Following this, PC Traynor and his colleague returned to Mr. Smith’s house, and when the neighbor opened the door, another disagreement “broke out,” which ultimately led to the brawl. PC Traynor has denied the charge, according to Commander Brittain, who said during the hearing that he “maintained that he acted in a reasonable self-defense and in defense of another.”

In addition to that, he said that the officer has filed an appeal against his conviction. As a result of the attack, Ms. Oborne said that the act was detrimental to both Mr. Smith and to the “public confidence in policing.” Her statement was made. The capacity of a police officer to retain their composure even when provoked is, in my opinion, of the utmost significance in terms of preserving the public’s faith in the police force,’ she went on to say.

Because Commander Brittain discovered that PC Traynor had engaged in serious misbehavior, he was fired without prior warning. During the hearing, he said that the acts of the officer were “deliberate” and “targeted,” and that the officer had the option to “walk away” but instead decided to remain and fight a subject that got “increasingly heated.”

‘Reputational injury’ was inflicted by PC Traynor on both the police department and Mr. Smith, who was his neighbor, according to Brittain. It was his opinion that the conduct of the 38-year-old police officer was “wholly unbecoming” for a law enforcement official and that it would cause the public to lose faith and confidence in the police.

On November 12, 2025, the Westminster Magistrates’ Court reached a verdict that indicated that PC Traynor was convicted of assault by beating. The judge ordered him to do eighty hours of unpaid labor, to participate in fifteen days of rehabilitation activities, and to pay Mr. Smith a total of five hundred pounds and eleven hundred forty-four pounds.

Regarding his appeal, he is scheduled to make an appearance at the Snarebrook Crown Court on February 2nd.
