Urgent NHS Warning to Book GP Appointment If Flu Symptoms Don’t Improve After Seven Days

The NHS has issued an urgent warning to Brits, advising them to book a GP appointment if flu symptoms persist for more than seven days. This comes amid what health experts are calling one of the “worst” flu seasons the UK has faced in years, with high flu cases and other winter illnesses putting immense pressure on the NHS.

Flu, or influenza, is a contagious viral infection that typically affects the respiratory system, causing symptoms such as high fever, cough, and sore throat. For most people, it improves on its own, but some can experience severe complications, leading to hospitalizations. NHS national medical director, Professor Sir Stephen Powis, said, “The winter flu season has not only hit the NHS early this year, but it is potentially on track to be one of the worst we have ever seen, as the ‘quademic’ continues to increase pressure across services”, reported by the Mirror.

The term “quademic” refers to a rise in cases of flu combined with Covid, norovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). With festive gatherings and New Year celebrations, the NHS expects the peak of seasonal viruses is yet to come. Prof Powis added, “Frontline NHS staff are currently under significant pressure… we expect the peak of seasonal viruses is yet to come.”

While flu is highly infectious, it’s crucial for people to be aware of the symptoms. These include:

Sudden high temperature
Aching body
Fatigue and exhaustion
Dry cough
Sore throat
Headache
Difficulty sleeping
Loss of appetite
Diarrhea or tummy pain
Nausea and vomiting
For those with flu, the NHS recommends home remedies to help alleviate symptoms, including staying warm, resting, and drinking plenty of water. Over-the-counter medicines like paracetamol or ibuprofen can help with pain and fever. However, if your symptoms persist after seven days, the NHS advises booking an “urgent” GP appointment or calling NHS 111.

The NHS also stresses that vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women, those with long-term health conditions, and individuals with weakened immune systems, should seek medical advice sooner. Additionally, the flu virus spreads easily, especially within the first five days, so it’s essential to practice good hygiene—wash your hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow, and dispose of tissues immediately.

If you’re feeling unwell, the NHS advises staying home to reduce the risk of spreading the illness to others.
