Mrs Brown’s Boys Slammed by Viewers – But BBC Confirms It’s Coming Back with a Brand-New Series

After years of declining ratings and some pretty brutal viewer feedback, Mrs Brown’s Boys has finally broken its silence about its future – and despite the backlash, it’s not going anywhere just yet. The Irish sitcom, fronted by Brendan O’Carroll, took a bit of a hammering after its most recent Christmas Day episode in 2024 pulled in just 2.2 million viewers. That’s a massive drop from the 3.67 million it managed the year before – and nowhere near its glory days back in 2013 when it raked in a whopping 11.4 million.
Recent specials haven’t gone down well with many, with some calling them “painful to watch” and switching off entirely. It’s led to growing calls online for the BBC to finally axe the show altogether. But instead of bowing out, the team behind the show has come back with a clear message: they’re still here – and a new series is in the works, reported the Express.
The official Mrs Brown’s Boys Instagram account posted a photo of the cast alongside a callout for audience members to apply for tickets. “Hi anyone looking to be in the audience for our recordings of a new series of Mrs Brown’s Boys click here to apply to be in with a chance,” the caption read, with a link to the BBC’s application form.
The BBC confirmed that filming will take place in May 2025 at their Pacific Quay studios in Scotland. Anyone hoping to attend can register for a random drawing before 10 pm on Thursday, 10 April, with a maximum of two tickets per person up for grabs.
The announcement has stirred a mix of reactions online. One fan was over the moon, writing: “Can’t wait to see the new series. I watch your show practically every day.” But others were less impressed, with one saying: “How has this been recommissioned haha?” Still, some seemed genuinely excited that it’s more than just a Christmas special this time around, with one viewer writing: “New series?? Not just a Christmas special? I’m excited for this!” Another joked: “I don’t even care if it’s a six hour drive, if I’m getting tickets I’ll make it in two.”
This will be the show’s fifth full series for the BBC, and the broadcaster isn’t shy about hyping it up. “Agnes Brown and the gang from Finglas are back! Everyone’s favourite Irish Mammy returns for a brand new fifth series featuring all your favourite characters, so get ready for more slapstick shenanigans this spring!”
