Heartbroken Mother Bids Final Farewell to “Perfect Son” Evan Hansen

This is the moment a mother has to say her final goodbye to her “perfect son.” Evan Hansen tragically passed away in hospital three days after being discovered with severe injuries on a path near the A19 in South Tyneside. He had vanished from his home during the night.

Police are treating the 17-year-old’s death as unexplained, but his devastated family believes the teenager decided to take his own life.

Speaking to the Chronicle Live, Evan’s heartbroken mother, Kirsty, and sister, Shannon, have opened up about their grief.

Kirsty, aged 45, shared: “He was perfect. I’m heartbroken.”

Shannon, 27, said: “It doesn’t feel real to any of us. We have always said Evan was special. There’s always just been something about Evan for all of us. It’s as if we knew we were on borrowed time.”

Evan lived with his mum and four siblings: Shannon, Brittany, 26, Zac, eight, and Alara, six. His family says he had dreams of becoming a business owner and was passionate about sports.

Kirsty continued: “He helped me a lot with his little brothers and sisters. He loved boxing running and football. He was going to do the Great North Run.”

Shannon and Kirsty described Evan as a happy lad who occasionally suffered from episodes of feeling down, particularly under stress. However, in the days and weeks leading up to his death, they saw no unusual behavior.

Kirsty said: “He was really happy and wasn’t a depressed person. I really did not see this coming. The night before he was really happy, he had just got a car from his uncle. He was taking photos in the car, he was so happy.”

On May 14, Kirsty said Evan had gone to bed early but left the house in the middle of the night without warning.

She revealed: “He went to bed as normal then I never saw him again. We know he ran out of the house in the middle of the night with no socks on and no phone.”

He was found injured by a dog walker on a cycle track not far from his home and was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. He underwent two surgeries while doctors fought to save his life. His family initially thought the teen would pull through, but his condition worsened on May 18, and he passed away with his mum by his hospital bedside.

Police have issued an appeal for information regarding Evan’s tragic death. His family is eager for the police to wrap up their inquiries promptly so that Evan can finally be laid to rest.

Det Insp Neal Craig from Northumbria Police expressed his sorrow, stating: “This is devastating news and we continue to offer our support to Evan’s loved ones at this tragic time. A number of enquiries are underway to ascertain exactly how Evan has sustained his injuries, and how he ended up on the cycle track. I’d like to thank those who have come forward with information to date however, we know this is a busy area with many passing motorists and residents, including dog walkers.”

He urged the public to contribute any information they might have: “Please get in touch if you think you can assist our inquiries even the smallest detail might help us to get answers for Evan’s family.”
