Met Office warns wet weather could cause serious disruption
If you were hoping for a dry lead-up to Easter, you might want to grab your umbrella. The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning covering a big chunk of the UK, with heavy downpours hitting parts of the South West, Wales, the West Midlands, and areas along the north-west border.
The warning kicked in at midday on Tuesday and is expected to last through to the same time on Wednesday. And it’s already made a splash — Whitechurch in west Wales recorded a whopping 50.2mm of rain on Tuesday alone. The Met Office reckons some spots under the warning could see as much as 75mm before it’s all over.
Over in Northern Ireland, eastern areas are also under a yellow warning that started at 2 am on Wednesday and runs until 9 pm. The rain’s expected to stay pretty consistent, with occasional heavy bursts throughout the day. Most of the affected areas are likely to get between 20-30mm, but higher ground in County Antrim and County Down might get hit with 50-60mm before things calm down by the evening.
The Met Office explained that the rain will gradually build up, especially in western parts of the country, where it’s been raining since Monday. In the east, things might come down in shorter but heavier bursts, with thunderstorms and slow-moving showers adding to the mix.
There’s still a bit of uncertainty about exactly where the worst of it will fall, but the general advice is clear — be prepared for some seriously wet weather, especially if you’re traveling or making plans ahead of the bank holiday weekend.
The weather warning comes with the usual risks — possible flooding, tricky driving conditions, and delays to public transport. So if you’re heading out, it might be worth checking updates and keeping a raincoat handy.
This isn’t exactly the spring sunshine many were hoping for, but at least we’ve been given the heads-up. Let’s just hope the skies clear in time for the Easter weekend.
