Met Office Forecasts Snow and Chilly Conditions for Southern Britain Through April

The Met Office has issued a caution regarding “blocking patterns” that are poised to usher in snowfall extending to southern Britain, with chilly conditions anticipated to persist until April. The National Weather Service highlighted that northerly and easterly winds originating from the Arctic and Scandinavia could be responsible for the impending snow and ice. While specific regions likely to be impacted remain uncertain due to the forecast’s extended duration, the probability of snow and ice is expected to diminish as the month advances, with temperatures projected to hover near or below the average mark.

In its long-range forecast for the latter half of March, the Met Office indicated that northerly winds might lead to snowy and icy conditions. The likelihood of “blocking patterns” increases, favoring winds from the north and east, which, despite the season, can still pose “wintry hazards” like snow and ice. The forecast suggests wetter conditions predominantly in the south, whereas northern areas might experience drier weather.

Recent weather developments saw several regions, including Somerset, Gloucestershire, and Worcestershire, experience a light snow cover after a particularly cold night. Moreover, the Met Office issued a warning of potential brief snow spells that could complicate driving conditions in some areas. This was corroborated by National Highways: South-West, which reported snow on motorways, advising travelers to allocate extra time for their journeys due to the snowfall, despite gritting efforts. A yellow snow warning remains effective until mid-morning.
