Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross call it quits after nine years

Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have quietly ended their relationship after nine years together, closing a chapter that blended family life, creative collaboration, and a significant age gap that often drew public attention. The 69-year-old actor-director and the 35-year-old screenwriter separated roughly a year ago but have remained focused on co-parenting their 8-year-old son, Lars.

The pair confirmed the split in a joint statement released Tuesday to People. “Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,” the former couple said. We met in 2014 through mutual friends and quickly formed a connection. At the time, Ross was 23 and had been recruited by Gibson’s production company to co-write a script. Gibson, then 58, reportedly took Ross on a luxury trip to Costa Rica shortly after they met.

In 2017, the couple welcomed their son Lars, just days before Gibson earned a Best Director Oscar nomination for Hacksaw Ridge. Reflecting on that moment, Gibson said at the time, “What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son?”

Ross, a literature graduate of Emerson College, went on to establish herself as a screenwriter and director. Her credits include work on the TV drama Matador and the 2022 film Father Stu, which starred both Gibson and Mark Wahlberg. She remains involved in several projects still in development, including Black Sam and Barbarian, which has been described as a “female Braveheart.”

Outside of film, Ross is also an accomplished equestrian. She won a gold medal at the World Equestrian Games in 2010, years before her Hollywood career took shape. Gibson’s personal life has long been marked by high-profile relationships and controversy. He was married to Robyn Moore Gibson from 1980 to 2011, and the couple shared seven children. He later dated singer Oksana Grigorieva, with whom he has a daughter, Lucia.

That relationship ended amid domestic violence allegations, leaked recordings, and legal consequences, including a 2011 no-contest plea to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. In more recent years, Gibson has spoken candidly and sometimes humorously about his past mistakes.

On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he joked that the advice he’d give his younger self would be to “shut the f*** up,” a remark many saw as a self-aware nod to his turbulent history. Despite their separation, Gibson and Ross appear united in one priority: raising their son together, away from public drama, as they move forward separately.
