Lulu Makes Heartbreaking Confession about Family Life

Scottish music legend Lulu has opened up in a touching and emotional chat about her childhood, parenting, and the lessons she’s carried with her through life. Speaking on Richard E. Grant’s Turning Point podcast, the 76-year-old icon reflected on how her Glasgow upbringing shaped her parenting style – and revealed some of the deep emotions she still carries today.
The “Shout” singer shares son Jordan Frieda with renowned celebrity hairstylist John Frieda. Their love story started in quite a down-to-earth way – he worked as an assistant in the salon where Lulu got her hair done. The spark was instant, and they tied the knot in 1977. Just two months after saying “I do,” they welcomed Jordan. Though their marriage ended in 1992, Lulu has been open about how tough the breakup was for her.
In her conversation with Grant, Lulu admitted that she’s often questioned her parenting skills, especially considering the kind of home she grew up in. Responding to Richard’s own story of a reserved upbringing – where a handshake with his father and a tentative hug for his mother were the norm – Lulu said hers wasn’t all that different.
“My parents weren’t very tactile either,” she shared. “I love them and they love me but it wasn’t their way so I constantly cuddle my son and my grandchildren.”
Then came a brutally honest moment that many parents will relate to. “I can’t say I was a great parent. I did my best and that’s what I have to say about my parents – they did their best.”
When asked how her son might describe her as a mum, Lulu revealed something rather heartwarming. “He has forgiven me for all of the things… he’s so magnanimous but he’s also very intelligent. And kindness and intelligence, I think, come together – so he’s kind.”
This isn’t the first time Lulu’s talked about the emotional weight of her upbringing. On the Rosebud podcast with Gyles Brandreth, she broke down in tears while remembering her mum and dad, describing their relationship as loving but flawed.
“They loved each other because ultimately, they stayed together, which sounds crazy because today it wouldn’t happen,” she said. “My mother died first… then my father died two years later, I would say of a broken heart.”
Trying to make peace with the past, Lulu said she’s come to realise the challenges her parents faced weren’t entirely their fault. “Now, I know that none of it was their fault, their behaviours were the life they had landed in… No matter what went on, I felt their love.”
Lulu’s been in the spotlight for over six decades – from bursting onto the scene with Shout in 1964, to winning Eurovision in 1969 with Boom Bang-a-Bang, and more recently being awarded a CBE in 2021 for her contribution to music and charity.
Through it all, her honesty and openness prove that beneath the glitz and glam, she’s always been just as real as the rest of us.
