Lucy Letby Granted Opportunity to Participate in Appeal Against Conviction via Video Link

Convicted of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder six others, nurse Lucy Letby has been accorded the right to be present via video link at her upcoming appeal hearing. Letby’s legal team is set to request the Court of Appeal in London for permission to contest all her convictions during the provisional hearings scheduled for April 22-25, 2024.

This follows after an initial plea for appeal made by Letby was denied by a single judge earlier in January, without a formal hearing. The upcoming April session offers Letby a renewed chance to present her case before a trio of judges.

The 34-year-old nurse faced a severe verdict in August 2023 when she was handed 14 whole life sentences for her crimes committed at the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neonatal unit between 2015 and 2016. Notably, Letby did not attend her own sentencing, choosing to remain in her cell.

The April hearings represent a crucial juncture for Letby, potentially marking the final stage in her appeal process. Additionally, Letby is slated for a retrial in June on an outstanding charge of attempting to murder an infant, referred to as Child K, in February 2016. Due to a court order, the identities of the involved children, both deceased and survivors, remain protected from public disclosure.
