“Like the Wild West” Horses Stampede Through Quiet Village Street
Share0A herd of horses caused chaos in a Nottinghamshire village after escaping from nearby stables and charging through a residential street, damaging several cars as they went.
The stampede involved 12 horses and happened in East Leake, where stunned locals watched the animals gallop straight down the road, turning a normally peaceful area into something out of a film.
CCTV footage captured the moment the horses thundered through the street at speed, forcing drivers to slam on their brakes to avoid being caught in the middle. Cars can be seen slowing down and stopping as the horses race past, narrowly missing vehicles and leaving residents shocked at what they had just witnessed.
Some of the animals reportedly struck parked cars as they ran through, leaving dents and damage behind. Residents also said the horses ended up wandering into gardens, flattening flowerbeds, and causing a bit of a mess before they were eventually rounded up.
Inspector Tim Cuthbert confirmed the incident was brought under control shortly afterwards, with police helping the owner regain control of the horses.

He said: ‘The incident was safely resolved a short time later after officers assisted the owner to round up the horses.’ Locals described the scene as unbelievable, especially given how quiet the village usually is on a Sunday evening.
One resident told Birmingham Live: ‘It was a mad scene, one minute it’s a quiet Sunday evening and the next it’s like the Wild West. ‘Luckily, the horses stampeded down the road at a quiet time, otherwise someone could have gotten hurt.’
Another resident said damage had been done to at least one parked car during the chaos. They said: ‘My friend said his dad had parked his car, but the horses dented it when they ran past. ‘They also went in people’s gardens and flattened the odd flowerbed, but I hear they were all ok.’
While the situation could have ended far worse, locals said they were relieved no one was injured and that the horses were safely recovered.
The incident has left residents shaken, with many pointing out how quickly things could have turned dangerous if the street had been busier or if children had been outside at the time.
For now, it seems the village is returning to normal, although plenty of people are still talking about the moment East Leake briefly turned into a stampede zone.
