Labor Minister Faces Backlash Over Heating Bills While Pensioners Suffer

Labor Minister Liz Kendall is facing backlash after it was revealed that taxpayers have been footing the bill for her energy costs, while she is accused of heartlessly stripping pensioners of their winter fuel payments.

Kendall, who serves as the Work and Pensions Secretary, is reported to live in a £4million home in Notting Hill while overseeing cuts to the winter fuel allowance for elderly pensioners. These vulnerable individuals are now left facing the harsh winter without financial support, while Kendall allegedly had £3,182 of her energy costs covered by taxpayers between April 2023 and July 2024, reported by GB News.

The minister, whose combined salary with her husband, an Old Etonian banker, is estimated to be £760,000 annually, is seen by critics as a “champagne socialist” who demands more from the public while living a life of luxury. Her position as both a Cabinet Minister and an MP provides her with a £67,500 ministerial salary and a £91,000 MP salary. However, according to various reports, it seems she is passing off her personal energy costs onto the very people she is supposed to serve.

This incident adds to growing concerns about hypocrisy within the Labour Party, with other high-ranking members also accused of similarly extravagant claims. Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves, whose heating bill came to £4,400, and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, whose energy expenses increased from £650 to £1,100, are just some of the figures whose claims are sparking outrage. A total of 162 Labour MPs have collectively claimed £425,000 on expenses related to their home and energy bills.

The uproar comes after Labour’s decision to cut the winter fuel payment, leaving many elderly pensioners to face the bitter cold without assistance. Critics are furious, pointing out that Labour MPs who are benefiting from large expenses claims have failed to empathize with those who will be most affected by the rising energy costs.

Liam Byrne, a Labour MP who has claimed £17,000 in expenses over the past six years, also voted to cut winter fuel payments, despite the increase in his personal claims. Meanwhile, the party has continued to provide support for foreign aid, including over £500 million for foreign farmers, while domestic policies harm the very citizens they are meant to serve.

In stark contrast, GB News viewers and listeners have shown compassion, raising £400,000 through Gift Aid for the Friends of the Elderly charity to help pay energy bills for vulnerable pensioners. The call for action is clear— “Give us our money back.”
