TV Favourite Kym Marsh Quits Hit Role After Five Series – Says She’s Ready to “Enjoy Freedom” Post-Split

Kym Marsh has officially waved goodbye to Waterloo Road, after five series on the BBC drama. She’s already filmed her final scenes, bringing her time as canteen worker Nicky Walters to a close. Kym joined the show when it relaunched in 2023, and her character quickly became a key part of the drama.

From tackling poverty and family struggles to navigating the ups and downs of her relationship with Donte Charles (played by Adam Thomas), Nicky was always right at the heart of the action. Viewers followed her through powerful storylines involving her son Preston’s eating disorder and daughter Tonya’s battle with endometriosis, making her one of the show’s most emotionally gripping characters, reported Metro.co.uk.

For Kym, the role was also a bit of a homecoming – it marked her first major screen acting gig since she left Coronation Street in 2019, where she famously played Michelle Connor for 13 years. Her time on the cobbles saw some unforgettable storylines, from traumatic baby loss to complicated romances and everything in between.

Since stepping away from Corrie, Kym’s kept busy. She’s taken to the stage in everything from Elf the Musical to Fatal Attraction, and still pops up regularly on BBC Morning Live as a presenter. But now, according to a source quoted in The Sun, she’s ready to switch things up once again.

“Kym is in a new chapter of her life. She’s heading towards 50 and wants to try as many new things as she can,” the source said. It comes not long after reports of her split from boyfriend Samuel Thomas, who she met while touring with 101 Dalmatians the Musical. Part of her decision to end the relationship was a desire to embrace her freedom and focus on whatever exciting projects came next.

Unsurprisingly, the news has got Corrie fans buzzing with hope. Some took to Twitter/X to share their excitement at the thought of a Michelle Connor comeback. “She can return to Corrie as Michelle now,” one fan wrote, while another added: “Manifesting Michelle Connor back in Corrie.”

And Kym hasn’t ruled it out. Speaking previously, she said: “I’d never say never to going back as I absolutely adore Coronation Street and I had some of my best years there. I learned so much on that show and I made so many friends… Maybe one day!” For now, she’s keeping her next steps under wraps – but whatever comes next, fans will be watching.
