Keir Starmer Blasted Over Flagship Policy That’s Now Being Blamed for Costing Lives

Of all the promises made by Keir Starmer, the one that’s drawing the most fury right now is his vow to “smash the gangs” behind illegal Channel crossings. With nearly 10,000 migrants arriving by boat so far this year – a staggering 40% increase from the same time last year – people are questioning whether that promise was ever realistic to begin with. And tragically, dozens have already lost their lives in the process.
The heartbreaking reality of people drowning in the Channel has sparked renewed anger over the government’s decision to scrap the Rwanda policy introduced by the previous administration. Many believe that while the plan was controversial, it had the potential to scare off those thinking of risking the journey, reported The Express. Even before any flights took off, the threat alone was already having an impact, with reports suggesting migrants were choosing other routes, even bypassing the UK for Ireland.
That’s no longer the case. Critics argue that Starmer’s government sent a clear signal by ditching the plan: the borders are open again. And for desperate people, that means braving one of the most dangerous stretches of water in Europe, often on unseaworthy boats and with no guarantee of survival.
There’s anger not just about the numbers, but about what’s being seen as a complete failure to put in place a serious alternative. Without Rwanda, what’s the deterrent? Critics say there is none. They believe this government has dismantled the only tool that could have prevented more deaths, all in the name of political point-scoring.
Meanwhile, many migrants are being housed in hotels across the country, with rising costs adding fuel to the fire. There’s growing frustration over the asylum process itself, with many believing it’s being taken advantage of and that genuine cases are getting lost in the backlog.
Starmer’s other promises – no tax hikes on working people, frozen council tax, cheaper energy, and a “government of integrity” – are also under fire. But for many, it’s the “smash the gangs” slogan that’s left the worst taste. Because, unlike broken promises about bills or budgets, this one, they argue, is costing lives.
And every time news breaks of another boat capsizing or a young child lost at sea, people are left wondering how ministers can carry on as if nothing’s wrong.
