Loose Women’s Kaye Adams heartbreakingly admits fears about ageing health

Kaye Adams has opened up in a way that’s struck a chord with a lot of people, speaking honestly about her fears around growing older – and it’s not death she’s worried about, it’s what might come before it.

On a recent episode of her How To Be 60 podcast, Kaye got into a deep chat with her co-host Karen MacKenzie about ageing, care homes, and what later life might really look like. She didn’t hold back, sharing that while she’s not scared of the idea of dying, the thought of a long decline in health absolutely does give her pause, reported Wales Online.

“The actual expiring, I don’t think about that. Yeah, I don’t have a fear of that,” she said. “But I am like you. I do have a fear of prolonged ill health in old, old age because I’ve seen it with both my ma and dad, and it is no fun.” It’s a sentiment a lot of people can relate to, especially those who’ve seen loved ones go through similar struggles.

The chat also turned to the subject of care homes, which can be a touchy topic for many. While Karen raised some concerns, Kaye was more optimistic, saying she believes there are good care homes out there – even “posh ones” – and that it’s possible to have a positive experience if you end up in the right place.

Her reflections are clearly coming from a deeply personal place. Kaye lost her dad to dementia in 2017, and her mum passed away just 17 months later. She’s spoken in the past about how those losses have shaped her views on family, ageing, and how to approach the festive season without the familiar warmth of her parents’ home.

Speaking on Loose Women, she shared how her first Christmas without her dad forced her to rethink how she celebrated. “I think you kind of have to reinvent it,” she explained. “Like similar to you, I’ve lost both my mum and my dad, and Christmas was always, always at their house. The first one, after my dad died, we just kind of sleepwalked through it.”

The discussion around ageing also carries over into her work relationships, with a bit of cheeky humour thrown in. On the Loose Women podcast, Frankie Bridge addressed the running joke where she refers to Kaye as “nana” or “grandma”. Frankie cleared the air, saying: “I just want to make something very clear, we’ve always had this bantery relationship, haven’t we?”

Apparently, Kaye herself was the one who kicked it off, saying things like “I feel like your nana” during their early chats. It’s now become part of their friendly dynamic. Kaye even admitted to having “this thing with young, beautiful, glamorous women,” and didn’t expect to become close to Frankie at first – but now they’ve built a genuine friendship that regularly sees them discussing everything from work to getting older.

For Kaye, it seems ageing is something she’s learning to face head-on – with honesty, humour, and a whole lot of heart.
